How the gross to net calculator works

The calculator walks your salary through the same order most payroll systems use. It first removes your retirement contribution, because that is usually taken before tax and lowers the amount that gets taxed. It then applies your income tax rate to the remaining taxable income and subtracts any other yearly deductions such as health benefits.

Whatever is left is your annual take-home pay. Choose a pay period and the tool divides that figure into the amount you can expect each paycheck, while the donut chart shows how the original gross splits between you, the tax office and your retirement account.
