How the discount calculator works

A discount is a percentage taken off the original price. The calculator first finds the savings by multiplying the price by the discount rate, then subtracts that from the price to get the sale price. If you add a sales tax rate, it is applied to the discounted price, since that is the amount most stores actually tax.

The bar chart splits the original price into the part you pay and the part you save, so you can see at a glance how big the deal really is.

A quick example

A jacket is listed at $120 with 25% off. The discount saves $30, bringing the price to $90. Add an 8% sales tax and the tax is $7.20, for a final cost of $97.20. Without the discount you would have paid $129.60 after tax, so the markdown saves you $32.40 in all.

Things to keep in mind

Stacked discounts apply one after another, not added together, so 20% off then an extra 10% off is a 28% total discount, not 30%. For more on smart shopping and consumer rights, the Federal Trade Commission is a reliable source. Compare more numbers with our other free calculators.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage as a decimal to get the savings, then subtract that from the original price. For example, 25% off $120 is $120 × 0.25 = $30 saved, leaving a sale price of $90.

How do I work out the percentage off?

Divide the amount saved by the original price and multiply by 100. If a $120 item now costs $90, you saved $30, and $30 ÷ $120 × 100 = 25% off.

Does this calculator add sales tax?

Yes. Enter a sales tax rate and the calculator applies it to the discounted price, since tax is normally charged on what you actually pay rather than the original sticker price. Leave it at 0 to ignore tax.

What is the difference between a discount and a markup?

A discount lowers a price from its original value, while a markup raises a cost to set a selling price. They use the same percentage math but in opposite directions, so a 25% discount and a 25% markup do not cancel out.
